Birmingham New Street, All Change!
Birmingham New Street, All Change! (pjs 0688)
In this picture from 25/07/1964 New Street is in the midst of change. A temporary bridge has been built over the platforms and the road bridge at Navigation Street is also being reconstructed. The huge overall roof is still standing but not for much longer, it too will soon be swept away to be replaced by a shopping mall 'The Pallasades'. In a new configuration and named 'Grand Central' it still blights the station today, hiding the crappy concrete behind tin foil is just a bad joke.
1M23 is arriving from the west behind Stanier Black 5 45305, to the right Riddles Standard 4/2 76088 is waiting for work.
45305 was built by Armstrong Whitworth 31/03/1937, it was withdrawn 31/08/1968 and is preserved
76088 was not so lucky it was built at Horwich Works and put into traffic 31/05/1957, 10 years and one month later it was withdrawn (30/06/1967) and cutting followed 31/12/1967 at J. Buttigieg, Newport.
