South Africa GMA Garratt

GMA Garratt 4-8-2+2-8-4 4088 built in Manchester in 1956 shunting its train under the wires in Waterval Boven yard. I was invited onto the footplate & later to the house of the fireman where we had a drink & discussed the possibility of our moving to South Africa and me becoming a fireman on South Africa Railways. My geological career precluded it & apartheid still reigned so the option, while appealing, was not viable for me.
 Update 2016: this loco survived and was acquired by REGM mine from the Enyati Colliery Railway near Vryheid in Kwa-Zulu Natal in 1992. Enyati having purchased the loco directly from Spoornet in 1988 from storage at Witbank. Now stored at Mainline Steam depot, Parnell.
