Manchester Exchange station. The fireman of Black 5 4-6-0 45156 Ayrshire Yeomanry watches the photographer as it passes light engine on station pilot duties. The Class 40 diesel hauled train of coal empties is still trundling along the goods lines behind, 5th June 1968.
45156 carries a crude metal headboard with the words "End of Steam" hand written on it. The curved nameplate itself was a painted wooden replacement. Only a handful of the 100s of Black 5s built ever carried a name.
